Water Softeners
Ion-exchange softeners remove hardness (calcium and magnesium). Hardness is a nuisance, not a health issue, so softening is optional and based on preference.
What to look for
- Grain capacity sized to your hardness and household use
- Efficient regeneration (metered vs. timed)
- Option for potassium chloride if sodium is a concern
Certifications to check
| Standard | What it covers |
|---|---|
| NSF/ANSI 44 | Cation exchange water softeners (hardness reduction, efficiency) |
Certification is specific to a model and claim. Verify the exact contaminant on the unit’s data sheet or the certifier’s database.
Limitations
- Softening adds a small amount of sodium (or potassium); some owners keep an unsoftened drinking tap.
- Softeners do not remove most health-based contaminants.
