UV Treatment Systems
Ultraviolet systems inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms. They are used after a positive bacteria test, typically alongside pre-filtration and, often, well disinfection.
What to look for
- Dose/flow rating adequate for your peak flow
- Pre-filtration to meet the UV unit’s clarity requirements
- Lamp replacement schedule and alarms
Certifications to check
| Standard | What it covers |
|---|---|
| NSF/ANSI 55 | UV microbiological water treatment systems (Class A/B) |
Certification is specific to a model and claim. Verify the exact contaminant on the unit’s data sheet or the certifier’s database.
Limitations
- UV does not remove chemicals, metals, or sediment — only addresses microorganisms.
- UV requires clear water; turbidity and iron can shield organisms.
- A positive bacteria result should be investigated with your health department — UV is not a substitute for finding the contamination pathway.
