Iron Removal Systems
Iron filters remove iron (and often manganese) that cause rust staining and metallic taste. The right type depends on the form of iron, pH, and whether iron bacteria are present.
What to look for
- Media/technology matched to dissolved vs. oxidized iron and your pH
- Capacity sized to your measured iron concentration
- Backwash and regeneration requirements you can accommodate
Certifications to check
| Standard | What it covers |
|---|---|
| NSF/ANSI 42 | Aesthetic reduction claims, including iron where listed |
Certification is specific to a model and claim. Verify the exact contaminant on the unit’s data sheet or the certifier’s database.
Limitations
- Water softeners are not a general iron-removal solution and can be fouled by higher iron.
- Iron bacteria usually require shock chlorination in addition to filtration.
